Scandurra Studio wins the award for the Spiga26 project at the 2024 Ceramics of Italy Tile Competition
“The constant exploration of the expressive potential of materials and construction techniques has always been at the heart of our approach to every project. In Spiga26, thanks to the close collaboration between designers and manufacturers, traditional materials are reinterpreted in an innovative way, seeking a delicate balance between classical memory, references to the craftsmanship of the ateliers in the Quadrilatero, and the affirmation of a contemporary identity.”
Scandurra Studio is proud to announce that the Spiga26 project was awarded at the inaugural edition of the Ceramics of Italy Tile Competition, held during Cersaie 2024. The award ceremony took place at the Auditorium The Square in the Bologna exhibition center.
The Ceramics of Italy Tile Competition is an
international contest that celebrates the best projects realized with Italian ceramic tiles. This new edition was born from the merger of two historic competitions, one dedicated to the North American market and the other to Italy, to promote projects across Europe and North America. The 2024 edition focused on Europe, while the 2025 competition will take place in North America.
The Spiga26 project, located in the prestigious Quadrilatero della Moda in Milan, was designed by Scandurra Studio.
Scandurra Studio’s intervention is part of a broader urban regeneration project, born from the need to create new commercial and office spaces in a 1950s residential building constructed on the remains of Palazzo Pertusati, giving it a new identity. The building’s terraces, characterized by ceramic materials specifically designed by the studio in collaboration with Cotto d’Este, effortlessly blend tradition and modernity while adhering to high technical and environmental standards, including LEED certification. Cotto d’Este contributed over 2,000 square meters of external flooring, designed with a thickness of 20 mm and a herringbone pattern, which echoes the colors of the surrounding plaster and interacts with the Milan skyline.
Regarding the award, Alessandro Scandurra, founder and creative director of Scandurra Studio, said:
“For nearly 25 years, our mission has been to push the boundaries of space and contemporary design through meticulous research. Our goal is to enhance the lives of our communities and clients with every project. We operate globally, specializing in architecture, urban planning, and product design.”
The Spiga26 project reflects the studio’s commitment to:
– Durability as Sustainability: The use of durable materials ensures the long-term relevance and utility of the project, minimizing maintenance costs and environmental impact.
– Evolution: The innovative design responds to contemporary needs, such as by enlarging windows to maximize natural light and improve integration with the surrounding environment.
– Beauty as a Sensitive Tool Attuned to Reality: The project stands out for the creation of two distinct façades, which respectively engage with the commercial street of Via della Spiga and the surrounding neoclassical context.
