Before the opening of the Universal Exposition in Milan in 2015, Expo Gate represented the ideal opportunity to talk about growth and evolution in the city.

The work was conceived as a large device in constant change: two pavilions, reminiscent of the ancient “tollbooths” that flanked the city’s access gates, and an empty space in the centre to accommodate various types of events.

Expo Gate is the result of a group of simple elements: a square and two pavilions that define a piece of the city. The two lateral pyramid-shaped pavilions, made of steel and glass, have a subtle nature and frame the Sforza Castle, becoming a physical and digital access point to Expo. The square and twin pavilions build an urban system, a stage for events and daily public life.

The project proposes an open space characterised by a central square and two lateral pavilions. The work aims to confirm the 19th-century urban layout and to clearly recall the punctiform system of small monumental architecture that develops from Piazza Duomo along Via Dante to the Castle and around the Sempione Park, which has always had an exhibition vocation.

The Info Point, an expression of lightness, is the showcase of the scheduled events without becoming the protagonist itself. The structures outside are designed as a backstage to accommodate different types of communication and images. Banners, flags, and luminous graphics can be replaced from time to time and modified according to needs.
