The neighbourhood of Rogoredo – Santa Giulia has different souls and is in the midst of a profound transformation.

The proposal for the new headquarters of the Milan Conservatory represents an opportunity to complete a part of the city that, following the dismantling of the large steel production plants that once occupied the entire area, has been gradually built as an aggregate of distinct parts without a unified design, progressively losing the ability to communicate with each other.

The project proposes a device to create a dense network of new relationships: a connection tool open to the neighbourhood that exploits the potential of existing urban landscapes by connecting them, activating what already exists, and linking with the design in prospect. The proposed approach is to transform and continue what already exists.

The new conservatory is organised around two main areas: the spaces related to the residence of students, professors, and artists and those related to the two music schools and the auditorium. Both are concentrated in a compact volume occupying the western part of the project area. Concentrating the volume allows, on the one hand, to streamline connections between the functional areas of the building and on the other hand, to free up a large area for public space: a green gallery, a passing forest, crosses the entire project area from northeast to southwest, doubling the planted surface located in the non-buildable portion to the northeast of the area.

The particularly varied functional program contributes to activating a dense network of relationships, in which short and local networks coexist and interact with long, urban, and global networks, thus maintaining the liveliness and dynamism that characterises the urban dimension and promoting the construction of an open, dynamic, inclusive community, but with a strong identification with the neighbourhood.
